Cornerstone Strength uses the Starting Strength method of barbell training to build general strength ~ the foundation for endurance, speed, power, and balance in athletics and in life.
Barbell training allows individuals to build strength safely and incrementally using whole body movement patterns suited to their particular body, rather than having to conform their movements to a machine. Training the body as a whole system using big, multi-joint exercises strengthens coordinated movement patterns, builds bone density, and trains balance ~ making people real-world durable.
Building strength makes doing life easier ~ at any age ~ whether you're carrying groceries, competing in sporting events, chasing kids, or exploring the world.
Building strength creates faster, more powerful, more durable and injury-resistant athletes ~ all of which translates to better on-field performance.
Building a solid nutritional plan helps support your goals in the gym and in life ~ PN1 Certified Nutrition Coaching makes it easy with small, manageable steps.
The Starting Strength System makes use of the body's most basic movement patterns loaded progressively, to force the adaptations necessary for increased strength.
Unlike other popular exercise protocols, Starting Strength is a training system – a long-term process designed for getting stronger over time, not a random collection of exercises that just make you hot, sweaty, sore, confused, and tired today

Rebecca Fishburne has been working in the fitness industry since 2008 as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer, certified through ACE in 2015. For decades her passion was endurance sports, but in her forties, she discovered the benefits of barbell training. By 2017, this lead to an internship at Fivex3 Training, a Starting Strength affiliate gym in Baltimore, and she earned her SSC credential in 2019. She has competed and placed in USSF and USAPL meets and dabbled in the sport of Strongwoman.
Currently she works in the Annapolis/Severna Park area and at Fivex3 Training in Baltimore helping individuals of all ages gain strength and confidence in their abilities. She has experience working with athletes, business professionals, new mothers, senior citizens, military personnel, and individuals recovering from surgeries. Whether you're new to strength training and in need of direction and motivation, a regular stuck on a plateau, or an experienced lifter looking for form checks and more effective programming, she can help.
"I have trained with Rebecca for 5 months now, as a total beginner to the barbell and the Starting Strength program, and it has been a life changing experience. I found Rebecca on the Starting Strength website, after hearing about the SS program and how it can improve health-span. I’m a 66 year old female, and though I was in “okay” shape from doing classes at the gym pretty regularly, I’ve also been prone to injury, and not ever sure what I was doing wrong. With Rebecca’s help, I’m learning correct form for the 4 major barbell lifts, gotten progressively stronger, and I feel less prone to injury. I have had other trainers before, but she exceeds the abilities of any trainers I’ve encountered in my lifetime. Rebecca is incredibly thoughtful, extremely knowledgeable and attentive at every session, and very kind, patient and sensitive to all issues that could be affecting the session and your lifting. She is nuanced about when cues and corrections are most helpful, and how much information can be absorbed at a time. She’s given me a clear plan of how to continue to do progressive strength training as I continue through life. Rebecca is a great coach and teacher, and I highly recommend her to anyone of any age, but especially older adults looking to maintain their health as they age, stay active, stay strong and maintain bone density, with a measurable, extremely safe plan. It may seem expensive at first, but totally worth it when you are lucky enough to find someone like Rebecca! Plus, she makes it totally enjoyable!" ~ Laura T.
"Rebecca is an outstanding coach. I’m a 74 year old woman diagnosed with osteoporosis six years ago. I want to maintain strength and build bone without resorting to medication for as long as possible. To that end, I went to gym classes and did lots of cardio which helped my overall fitness, but I felt an organized, results based program was a key factor missing from the mix. I started training with Rebecca about six months ago because heavier lifting has been shown effective for building strength and bone density. It was the best move I’ve made for my heath in years! Rebecca has the program knowledge and a clear, precise way of communicating it. I found it difficult and uncomfortable to internalize the form safe weightlifting demands, but with Rebecca’s patience and encouragement I found I could learn it. This program has come to be the linchpin of my fitness journey. With Rebecca’s instruction I’ve gained strength and confidence. I look forward to training with Rebecca and she has given me the confidence to lift on my own as well. The Starting Strength principles will inform my fitness journey for good – and I recommend Rebecca to anyone interested in getting stronger and fitter safely, with a trainer who is smart, personable and fun to work with!" ~ Paula S.
"Rebecca is fantastic coach! I found her coaching services when I was looking to begin a barbell strength program to improve both my cycling and my general strength as I move into my mid-50s. My previous strength training efforts had always been a bit ad-hoc, and I felt the Starting Strength program would be a great way to get into barbell lifting in a more deliberate way. I started with a few in-person coaching sessions with Rebecca to learn the four lifts, and then transitioned to online coaching. I have learned a lot from Rebecca about all aspects of barbell strength training, and I have made a ton of progress. I notice my improved strength in many areas of daily life, and I particularly have noticed how my training has helped my become a stronger cyclist, particularly climbing. I recommend Rebecca without hesitation!" ~ Kathleen H.
" Rebecca is very engaged and professional. I’m a 67 year old woman who is just starting out in lifting. (I have very little exercise experience at all.) Once I discovered Starting Strength and found Rebecca nearby, I drove two hours to get the foundational instruction I needed to succeed. Rebecca allowed plenty of time to go over equipment, stances, and lifts, helping me to adjust my beginner’s form. She was attentive and kind, clearly giving instruction that was specific to my ability and goals. She followed-up with a written summary of observations and instructions. Thanks to Rebecca, I’m off to a good start with Starting Strength. Worth every penny!" ~ Sandy W.
"Rebecca is terrific. My son recommended the Starting Strength system and after reading and watching some videos, I wanted to find a coach. I found Rebecca through the Starting Strength listing of certified coaches who work remotely. Because I live in rural Vermont and have access to a home gym, I planned to work online. Rebecca was able to use zoom sessions to teach me the basic lifts and then I was able to upload videos of each session and she could see how I was doing, answer any questions and essentially be my coach in my home gym. Her style is informal and warm, and at the same time exacting and precise (and patient). It is such a benefit that I can develop and maintain a lifting program in spite of living “in the boonies”. I am a healthy 77-year old female who has always been active. Rebecca shows a real understanding of fitting serious weight training to the needs of an older body. I am completely convinced that weight training is an essential part of maintaining strength, balance and flexibility as one ages. Starting Strength and Rebecca’s coaching is my answer to this challenge." ~ Barbara P
"Rebecca is a fantastic coach and online coach- which are definitely different things! I was a complete beginner who’d never touched a barbell before, and she was able to get me proficient in the major lifts without any in-person work, and through the NLP to intermediate programming. Rebecca does a great job giving clear feedback and form checks, and answered all my newbie questions about programming, equipment, form, and on and on. If you’re on the fence about online coaching, DO IT- it’s a great way to make more progress than you thought possible." ~ C.J.
“I would recommend anyone of any age to seriously explore barbell training with Rebecca. The confidence gained from getting stronger cannot be understated, and Rebecca is the ideal person to help you begin your journey.” ~ Mylan D.
“I approached Rebecca for help with a negative attitude about my increasing age and changing body. She listened well, smiled more, and set a program that showed me I am strong and capable. She has the knowledge, skills, and positive energy to get me to do the tough stuff. Working with Rebecca makes me stronger inside and out!” ~ Michelle
“Rebecca helped me push past what I thought I could do to what I am capable of. I didn't realize that I was limiting myself because I didn't think I could do it.” ~ Beth
"After a year of a fairly focused regimen I felt like I’d hit a plateau and wasn’t making any further gains in my training. I was lucky enough to get a session with Rebecca and she really took the time to evaluate where I was in my workouts, what I was hoping to gain from them and how to adjust them to better achieve the desired results. She helped me simplify my routine and gave me much needed pointers on how to better utilize my time spent in the gym. I look forward to relying on her expertise and insight at future sessions." ~ Rob
